Morphostructural mapping of Borealis Planitia, Mercury

چکیده

Orbital data from the MESSENGER spacecraft show that a significant portion of Mercury’s northern hemisphere is covered by smooth plains, which are interpreted to be flood volcanic material and/or impact melt. The plains pervasive tectonic structures and encompass broad raised bulge uncertain geophysical interpretation. In this work, we focus on mapping all morphostructures within aiming at providing useful dataset for further studies about mapped area. structural map obtained through twofold process: first with an automatic mapping, using algorithm identify lineaments DEM; second visual inspection classification results in GIS environment. final maps drafted two different scales, 1:300,000 1:600,000. With approach, characterized more than fifty thousand lines marking scarps surface, creating database several morphometric attributes each identified (e.g. length, azimuth, height), can used geostatistical study tectonics. Our reveals that: (i) area broadly dominated wrinkle ridges, ghost crater assemblages lineaments, related processes radial faults, secondary chains, ejecta emplacement) (ii) amount strain was not evenly accommodated throughout plains.

The Anomalous Radar Transparency of Central Elysium Planitia and Amazonis Planitia

Introduction: The Shallow Radar instrument (SHARAD) on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) has been successful at penetrating into icy deposits [1-3], but most of the rocky units are opaque to SHARAD. The main exceptions to this are the youngest major volcanic surfaces, Cerberus Fossae 2 and 3 units and Amazonis Planitia 2 north unit [4]. We suggest that these units have low radar loss becaus...

Interpreting Mascon Wrinkle Ridges on Isidis Planitia, Mars Using Axial Surface Mapping Techniques: Reconstructing Structural Development and Stress Environments

Introduction: Isidis Planitia, a Noachian impact crater infilled with Hesperian aged basalts, is located on Mars on the crustal dichotomy and is antipodal to the Tharsis rise [1]. Measuring 1400 km across and 2 km deep, it is comparable in scale and age to lunar mascons. The basin contains an interesting pattern of both radial and concentric wrinkle ridges (see Figure 1), and massive graben are...
